Color and Value as in Black and White
What is Value?
Value is tone, form, expression, shading, higher levels of thinking, space and depth, modeling, light abd dark and one element you need to understand to make great art.
A three-dimensional object or, in an artwork, the representation of a three-dimensional object, defined by contour, height, depth, and width.
A contour line shows form.
Below are examples of geometric forms
*shows The lightness or darkness of a color.
Intensity should be used in place of brightness.
*value can be altered byadding white to make tints or black to make shades of a color.
The same theory can be placed upon black and white.
*Value is measured on a Value scale.
A Value scale is
A series of blocks showing the gradual increase of
Dark to light
* shows form, 3dimensio9ns, Volume, mass or the Illusion of depth.
* sets mood and emotion.
* Exhibits a higher order oF thinking
4 things value does:
1) show form or give form to shape.
2) exhibit depth and space
3) show or develop mood or expression
4) exhibit a higher order of thinking.
*Consistency in shading makes value work better.
Differing grades of pencil
Italian designates the relative contrast of dark and light in a drawing, painting or print. Artists use chiaroscuro to create the effects of
light. Light (chia) and dark (scuro) (
spatial depth, Volumetric forms) are some terms used to describe value.
Below are examples of
geometric forms and shading techniques
Shading is a term for A way of showing gradual changes in lightness or darkness. Shading helps make a picture look more 3 dimensional. (Chairoscuro) or real.
and hard edge
*Be consistent. establish a light source.
A technique to show distance or space on a two-dimensional plane.
The outside line of a shape or form.
The difference between to unlike things, such as a dark color and a Light color. A principle of Design.
Proper pencil holding technique
The correct way to establish Value
a) establish a light source
b) outline a contour lightly (1)
c) establish darkess areas (Spaces) Hatch them to denote what they are (2)
d) hatch in mid tones etc
e) Draw ( 4)
f) If nesscessary use a blender, stumb, paper towel or very carefully use a pressure sensitive technique.

The Technique of stippling
Below are the parts of a shadow. A pictorial device known as rim light is used On the object to separate the object and shadow. It is a sliver of reflected light.
By not drawing lines, the picture appears to be more real as no lines really exist in nature.
de Chirico, for more see gallery Notice how shadow and value work together to create a mood. In this case it is a harsh intense light that also creates long sharp shadows.
