What is Art 1?
A link or two that maybe helpful
Art 1 is a General Art Ed. Class as described in the MHS curriculum.
I base my teaching upon the elements of art and the principles of design. You will need to know how to use and recognize them.
You will learn to speak and write and think about them as the foundations of art.
Art making is a process of layering one idea with another, one thought upon another, addition and subtraction.
My class above and beyond every thing else is about thinking. Art does not always have to be creative or expressive. You do not need talent. you need drive and the ability to think your way through mistakes, options, choices and everything else that comes in to making art.
one does have to project some kind of honesty, a sense of process, good composition and truthfulness and effort. This all takes work.
There is also art history and cultural history. Art many times is a reflection of social history.
I want you to leave this class with the ability to go into a museum and not be scared of the work. I want you to have a way to find a crack in the work so that you might understand it, but definitely not be afraid of it. I want you to be able to carry on an intelligent conversation about art and culture and how it relates to the world we live in. I want you also to see that there is a process involved in the making of art and that it has inherent within it a method of creative problem solving that can be used anywhere, anywhere.
"stuff you gotta have"
By end of first week You will need a
*It should be a drawing and not a watercolor sketchbook and no news print..
*You will need it at every class. Put your name in the front of it.
*Pencils-3h,HB,4B or a 9mm twist erase mechanical pencil
*A good white eraser,
*12 color pencils
I grade according to the visual results of effort.
Your grade is based on my observations, your activities in class, written assignments and of course participation and finished work. also Completion of sketchbook assignments
Homework counts as much as class work. there are no percentages.
I also give quizzes so I hope this covers those of you theta will swear that you can not do art and you are more academically inclined.
We have web pages, use them.
I do not give Rubrics as you are expected to use what you learned from one project to the next.
There will always be a criteria to work from though and that will be made clear in the corresponding sections.
All you have to do is try. The results will speak for you.
Time limits are strictly enforced.
This is not a social time or arts and crafts.
The room is open every lunch period whether I am here or not. if you need me to be here, email.
I accept no excuses for late work unless I am informed in some way.
Just because this is a required class does not mean you are entitled to a good grade. All in all, Grading is simple
everything carries the same weight. and everything applies to the same result, you learning.
Come to me when there is a problem.
you are responsible and accountable for your learning and your life here in this class and this school..
Your opinion is important as long as you have a justifiable reason.
I do not ask that you agree with me, but if you do not, have a good reason. Tolerating each other
s opinions is very important.
tolerating each other is important.
Appropriate humor is essential so learn some good jokes and have some good comebacks. If you disrupt my class in any way shape or form, I will have you removed.
Be on time or have a valid pass.
Come in and get to work.
Sit where you are asked or assigned
I take attendance as the bell rings so, if you are not present, then you are marked absent and the rules of the school apply.
My bar is high.
This is high school and your efforts should reflect that.
I teach so you can learn.
I give quizzes to see what you are learning.
I want you to learn.
Phones/Ear buds/i pods etc (electrical appliances) are not allowed unless you have permission from me.
Yes I take them.
If you have special requirements I need a note.
Do not make a habit of bathroom visits
No unannounced visitors
Respect is very important, to the classroom,
The tools and supplies and to each other.Misuse them and you will pay the consequence.
There is absolutely no cheating.
*In emergencies - do as you are instructed.
I am not yo mama sectionbut I know their phone number
You must clean up after yourself.
tHIS INCLUDES THE FLOOR THE TABLE THE SINK ETC.
SUPPLIES must be put back where you got them.
You will have a space, A FOLDER, SOMEWHERE TO STORE YOUR WORK.
PLEASE REMEBER WHERE IT IS,
WHAT IT LOOK LIKES
YOUR CLASS NUMBERS/SECTION
AS I WILL NOT.
Do not ask me where it is. Put your work away.
You are responsible for your work. You will have a portfolio keep your work in it and a place to keep it.
My responsibility is to teach. Yours is to learn.
If you do not understand something, ask the question.
this is a "real class" and you are expected to produce.
The classroom is open 20 minutes before school
and 20 minutes after school.
It is open at every lunch,
but I need to know who is in the room, so tell me.
We have web sites that you are expected to use.
There are test and quizzes.
Most are un-announced.
Why, because I do not want you to just memorize. I want you to learn.
**I can be reached by email.
I will answer as quickly as possible.
The phone is not a reliable way to reach me.
so, if you must call (and they hate this) go through the office and leave a number.
If I leave the classroom you are expected to keep working. If you leave the class while I am out you will receive the biggest consequence I can give.
